We're experts in the book business - if you want a good recommendation, or are looking for a long-lost favorite childhood book, we can help you out. We're also a strong part of the Hudson community, often cooperating with the local schools and public library to plan children's programs and bring in major authors. Our roots are local, but we're moving into the future with online ordering and our website.

Sorry, no international orders. We've made the ordering process as simple as possible to follow. Where are we?
A Brief Illustrated History
In 1983, Liz Murphy and Elaine Ober purchased the store from the Burners and around 1990, made part of the second floor into bookselling space. (The upper level now houses art, travel, reference, women's issues, books on tape, and more.) In 1997, Murphy, now sole owner, transformed the basement of the store into the new "Lower Level". Since then, it has been the site for many author appearances and other events; in the fall and winter, it is transformed into The Learnéd Owl's Holiday Shop. Thirty-five years later, Hudson's little book shop on Main Street has expanded from two small rooms and 300 square feet to three floors of books totalling 2300 square feet! The Learnéd Owl is proud to be one of northeast Ohio's few remaining independent bookstores - an accomplishment that would not be possible without thirty years of wonderful community support that continues today.

Thirty-six years ago, Bob & Jean Isabel and their partner, Pam Anthony, opened The Learnéd Owl Book Shop at 204 N. Main Street. The shop was approximately 300 square feet and was in the half of the store now used for children's books, paperbacks, and greeting cards. The main room into which the front door now opens was a separate store, The Sampler.
