H.W. Brands at the Hudson Library

New York Times bestselling historian H. W. Brands returns to discuss his latest book, Heirs of the Founders: The Epic Rivalry of Henry Clay, John Calhoun and Daniel Webster, the Second Generation of American Giants. The book tells the riveting story of how a new set of political giants in 19th century America battled to complete the unfinished work of the Founding Fathers and decide the future of our democracy. New York Journal of Books called Heirs of the Founders “an engrossing, entertaining, and educating read on issues important then that echo today in the modern debate on the limits of federal government power.”

Brands holds the Jack S. Blanton Sr. Chair at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned graduate degrees in mathematics and history, and a doctorate in history from the University of Texas at Austin. He writes on American history and politics and has written over twenty-five books, several which have been bestsellers. The First American and Traitor to His Class were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. Brands is a regular guest on national radio and television programs, and is frequently interviewed by the American and foreign press.
