Akron author Susan Amari will return to The Learned Owl Book Shop Saturday, March 10th, from 1 to 3 p.m., with her second book, "Year of the Red Fire Monkey". Her previous visit was to introduce and sign her first book, "A Calculated Guess". Both books will be available at the March event.
Amari's debut novel deals with two friends who reconnect at a forty-year college reunion and unwittingly become part of each other's plan for a last chance start over. Several other characters, equally haunted by the past, become involved and things become complicated. The death of a woman on an Ohio road leads to a question that lingers in all of their minds: Was the death a random occurrence, or a casualty of the past?
The second novel is set in the year 2016, which allowed the author "...to incorporate topics of local interest -- the Cavs championship and the presidential election -- to echo themes of disruption and surprise, traditional hallmarks of 'Red Monkey' years." The novel also deals with the lingering effects of a young person's death when drugs or alcohol play a significant role. Interestingly, this character is woven into the narrative as a spirit observer, charged with watching the lingering effects of her death on the people she left behind.
Amari was the recipient of an Award of Excellence in Feature Writing from the Akron chapter of Women in Communications. She is a long-time area columnist and journalist, co-contributor the Chicken Soup and Cup of Inspiration series, and a past feature writer for Family Circle magazine.
