Thrity Umrigar at Hudson Library (June 20)

Bestselling author Thrity Umrigar will be at the library to discuss her newest book, Everybody’s Son. The novel explores issues of race, class, privilege, and power and asks us to consider uncomfortable moral questions in this probing, ambitious, emotionally wrenching novel of two families—one black, one white.

In addition to Everybody’s Son, Umrigar is the author of six novels – The Story Hour, The World We Found, The Weight of Heaven, The Space Between Us, If Today Be Sweet and Bombay Time – and the memoir First Darling of the Morning. Born in Bombay, India, Umrigar came to the U.S. when she was 21. After earning a M.A. in journalism at Ohio State, she worked for several years as an award-winning reporter, columnist and magazine writer. She also earned a Ph.D. in English from Kent State. In 1999, Umrigar won a one-year Nieman Fellowship to Harvard, which is given to mid-career journalists. While at Harvard, Umrigar wrote Bombay Time. The publication and success of the novel allowed her to make a career change, and in 2002 she accepted a teaching position at Case Western Reserve University, where she is now the Armington Professor of English. She also does occasional freelance pieces for national publications and has written for the Washington Post and the Boston Globe'sbook pages.

Copies of Umrigar’s books will available for purchase and signing courtesy of the Learned Owl Book Shop.  Register for this free program online at or call (330) 653-6658 x1010.
