In 1917, women telephone operators were recruited by the U.S. Army Signal Corps to facilitate rapid communication with soldiers in the field. These brave women, who had to be fluent in English and French and remain steady under fire, were able to connect calls in ten seconds, a huge improvement over the male soldiers they replaced. Chiaverini’s novel brings to life the stories of these women who broke down gender barriers in the military, smashed the workplace glass ceiling and battled a pandemic as they helped lead the Allies to victory.
From New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Chiaverini, a bold, revelatory novel about one of the great untold stories of World War I—the women of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, who broke down gender barriers in the military and battled a pandemic as they helped lead the Allies to victory.
